How do you hire a DJ?
What should you look for?
How do you know that the DJ is legitimate and won't run off with your money?

These are a few of the questions that might be running through your mind. There are already many things you have to consider for your wedding, hiring the DJ should not be the hardest thing you do. Here are some points to consider:

The professionalism of the DJ upon the initial meeting. When meeting with the DJ, he/she should have a proposal for you outlining the services that can be provided. The DJ should be dressed professionally and behave in a business type of manner when meeting with you. In the proposal, the DJ should provide you with information on song lists, handling a reception, their MC services, references, and wedding planning sheets (i.e. the wedding party songs). Above all of this, the DJ should provide a legally binding contract of services rendered and the costs involved.

If there is no contract to sign between parties, DO NOT HIRE THE DJ.

In terms of cost, remember that cheaper is not always better. If the cost quote is very low, think about that. Why is this DJ so cheap? What are they not able to do or do they have any experience at all?

Here are some questions you should ask to help you decide on a DJ.
Maybe I should use an MP3 player instead of a DJ and save some money.
With all of the money you have already spent on your wedding, why "scrimp" on a few dollars for one of the most critical components to your wedding?

Maybe I should go with one of those National DJ companies. Their cheap after all!

Can the DJ answer all of your questions?
If the DJ is unable to answer any of your questions, this is something to consider. The DJ should make you feel at ease and confident that he/she can handle the job. The DJ should not leave you with an uneasy feeling.

Does the DJ have experience?

Find out how many years the DJ has been in business. Ask if they are a member of the local Chamber of Commence or Better Business Bureau. Ask if they are a local business owner. Ask about their ability to handle any situation that may arise during a reception. Double check that they have experience with a wedding reception the size of yours and the format of your reception (backyard wedding, formal church wedding.) Experience is not the only factor to consider, but it is an important one.

Is there back-up equipment available on-site?
If there is an equipment malfunction, what will the DJ do? The back-up equipment needs to be "on-site" and not "back at the office". This insures that the reception will run smoothly with only a minimal break in entertainment.

Is there an ample music selection for your reception?
Does the DJ have the music you want? Are they willing to provide specific songs or a "theme" of songs such as a country wedding or a tropical wedding?

Is there a wide variety in the DJ's library of music? Your DJ should have a library of over 50,000 song titles to choose from with the knowledge to back it up. Does the music selection satisfy all ages and musical tastes that may be present at the reception? The DJ should organize the event according to your "likes" and "dislikes". Does the DJ take requests during an event?

A professional DJ will mix all types of music well. Your DJ should do it all with style, microphone presence, and proper volume.

Is the DJ a digital DJ?
What this means is their system is computerized. In today's age of technology, all legitimate DJs should be digital. A digital DJ can respond more to your needs. They do not need to "hunt for CDs" in order to find a song.  If they are still using CDs, you have to wonder why they did not upgrade their system.  This would make them questionable.

Does your DJ have references? Is the company a member of the Better Busines Bureau?
Always check references and for a Better Business Bureau Membership.

Be sure to check references and recommendations. If the DJ does not have references, do not hire them. Make sure that the references are for similar events to yours such as wedding references for your wedding. If the DJ is NOT a member of the Better Business Bureau - there is a reason for that!

Is the sound equipment being used of a professional grade and not "for home use" only?
Home stereo equipment is unreliable and distorted when used in a setting such as a reception. The ability of the equipment to project across a room and through a large crowd of people is very important. If your guests can't hear the music or announcements, then no one can enjoy it. Ask whether your prospective DJ works with professional audio equipment. If the DJ calls themselves a "professional", then why would the equipment be anything else but professional grade?

Again, if there is no contract to sign between parties, DO NOT HIRE THE DJ.
